5 tips for IELTS Writing

There are 2 types of writing test depending on whether you’re taking the general training or academic exam.  These 5 tips are relevant for both types.
·         Manage your time – you are given 1 hour to answer 2 tasks in the writing test.  Task1 accounts for one third of the score, while task2 accounts for the other two thirds.  Therefore it is logical to spend 20 minutes on the first task and 40 minutes for the second task.
·         Follow instructions – you have to meet a certain number of words for you not to be penalized, 150 words for the first task and 250 words for the second task.  You will also be given some task, you will have to meet all task required of you.  If you were asked to agree or disagree, choose one and support your viewpoint.
·         Grammar and spelling – please follow proper grammar when you’re writing.  Things as simple as “your” and “you’re” are very important in the writing test.  Avoid using contractions like “you’re” and “they’re”, writing “you are” and “they are” would not only prevent you from making a mistake, it will also  give you 1 additional word for the final word count.
·         Structure – following the proper structure in the writing test is important.  Write in an essay format when answering the second task and the first task for the academic exam.  Having 3 paragraphs in the letter would also be good.
·         Practice – for the general training exam, practice writing letters to different people and institutions.  Follow the proper style/voice when writing, whether it was a friendly or formal letter.  Practice interpreting or writing about trends in different graphs, tables, charts and maps.  For the second task, you can practice giving your opinion on newspaper or magazine articles.
