Sentence Completion – IELTS Listening Test

Sentence completion is one of many tasks you will run into during your listening test.  Some consider this as one of the most difficult task in the listening test.  The reason for this is your grammatical knowledge is as important as your ability to listen, the answers given needs to be grammatically correct within the given sentence.
Sentence completion requires you to know general information and specific information about the topic or event.  It is generally good practice to listen to the news on television or radio, but it would be even better to listen to a news clip that you can play again, to check if you understood or heard the details.
A good practice exercise woul
d be to visit youtube and listen to any informative video or any how to video, while listening try answering the What, Where, Who, How and Why of the video.  In addition, try not to watch the video, the visuals may give you clues about what to expect.  It is better to exercise your listening skill.
Listen to the video again after you have answered the 5 questions (What, Where, Who, How and Why).  Check if you got all the 5 questions right.  Make sure to consider your grammar when answering the 5 questions.  If you are not accustomed to listening or watching English videos or news, I would advice to focus more on the listening aspect of this exercise more than the answering.  Move on answering the 5 questions when you feel comfortable listening to English.
When listening and answering the 5 questions becomes second nature to you, move on to paraphrasing whatever it is your listening to.
Good luck with your IELTS exam.
