5 tips for IELTS Listening

The listening test last for 30 minutes, you are then given 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the answer sheet.  Here are some tips to help improve your test score.
·         Focus – the exam last for 30 minutes, try not to lose your focus.  It is very important not to lose your focus since there will be instances in the dialogue and monologue where the speaker will state an opinion or change their mind.  The answer will have to of course be the fact or the final decision.
·         Mark key words – you will be given enough time to read the questions before the dialogue or monologue begins.  Try to mark (underline or encircle) key words, what specific information is being asked.  The what, who, where and when questions should give you an idea of what you need to look out for when listening.
·         Follow directions – just like the reading exam, you may be asked to give a certain number of words for your answer, paraphrase accordingly.  You may also be asked to answer with a letter (A, B, C or D), don’t answer with the corresponding word or phrase.
·         Don’t panic – if in case you miss a question, don’t panic.  Just move on and try to find the answer to the next question.  The answer will usually appear in the same order as the question.  If you do miss a question, make an educated guess before the 10 minutes are up.
·         Practice – the listening test is primarily done in the British accent, the expressions being used are also British.  Try to watch British TV shows and watch British News; or do what I personally did, I watched British Stand up comedy, Jimmy Carr is my favorite.
